Weight loss in festive season.

Come August and season of festivals begins in India. It’s a time of happiness and merriment, and the most popular way of celebrating this season is by sharing and eating different kinds of tasty and attractive sweets. Unfortunately, there is one inevitable consequence that we would like to avoid, and that is putting on weight. Since these food items are rarely made at home and are mostly bought from shops, it’s impossible to change the calorific value. But where there is a problem, there is always a solution.

Here are some of the time tested tips that have helped our clients lose weight.

Drink water regularly.

Surprisingly, keeping our body hydrated all the time helps a lot in keeping our eating under control. Many a times thirst can be mistaken as hunger. Also, even if there is a genuine hunger, starting with a few sips of water keeps eating down partly by filling our tummy full. So, keeping zero calorie tasty drinks available all the time at home, in travel or in office, goes a long way to keep the hunger down.

Fruits, nature’s gift to mankind.

Fruits by nature are sweet in taste, pleasant in flavor, low in calories, easily available, naturally packed and need no cooking. To get the same feeling of satiety as from one banana (100 calories), we have to eat 2-3 pieces of sweets (500 + calories).

So, keeping raw cut fruits attractively placed along with sweets and eating some of them before eating sweets or along with them can bring down the calorie intake.

Eating 3-5 fruits per day is recommended.

Regular meals.

Eating regular meals of nourishing food that is high in complex carbs and fiber will bring down the feeling of hunger in between. Using fruits, spiced up salads in the beginning of meal can help.

Healthy snacks.

Snacks like roasted chana or corn bhel or bhutta (corn cob), sprout bhel for snacks will keep the craving for sweets down.

Stay happy.

Easily said than done! But, one of the biggest culprits is our mind status. Feeling depressed, bored or stressed usually leads to eating sweets or fried things, sometimes in large quantity. Basically, we are seeking pleasure or trying to cope with stress. This is a major issue today in the urbanized life but is least discussed. Finding other methods of pleasure or stress busting can help in reducing the craving. Simple things like walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, playing a musical instrument, reading a book, talking to a friend, playing with children can help to combat these negative feelings.

Regular physical activity.

Physical activity not only helps in burning the extra fat but is the most powerful natural anti-depressant. It gives the extra bonus of increasing our feeling of wellbeing, thereby reducing the irregular craving. The reason being, any sustained physical activity produces happy hormones in our body.

Psychology of change.

Change is essential but change is difficult, so start with small changes, one at a time. Try to make the change as pleasant and as close to your individual likes and lifestyle. Taking advice of a dietitian who understands your psychology and makes the diet changes accordingly can help. This way you can follow it lifelong and not just during short festive season.
